ADVANCED SHORT COURSE IN

OPTIMIZATION AND GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION

Aug 17, 2004

The Research Center for Groundwater Remediation Design (RCGRD) at the University of Vermont will present an intermediate level course dedicated to an understanding of the concepts that underpin optimization software dedicated to groundwater remediation. The course provides an introduction to the use of optimization techniques within the context of 1) plume definition, 2) pump and treat remediation (both gradient based and concentration based) and 3) long term monitoring. Each concept is introduced as an optimization problem and illustrated through a field application. The course will provide the insight necessary for groundwater professionals to assess the strengths and limitations of groundwater remediation optimization methodology.

Primary lecturers:
George F. Pinder, PhD, is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a secondary appointment in Mathematics and Statistics and in Computer Science at the
University of Vermont. His area of interest is the development and application of applied mathematics, especially numerical mathematics to solve groundwater contamination and supply problems using computers.
Larry M. Deschaine, P.E., is a Systems Simulation and Design and Optimization Engineer at SAIC. He specializes in complex system simulation and optimization, design optimization, life cycle cost optimization, decision support analysis, risk assessment, industrial and environmental process simulation and optimization, innovative remedial technology analysis, and scientific data mining.

Registration fee: $395
Closing Date:
July 30, 2004 a decision as to whether to hold the course will be made based upon the number of registered participants.
